Free Racing Game MMO Gets in the Holiday Spirit

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

KartRider remains one of my favorite non-RPG MMOs. The Mario Kart style racing remains a lot of fun. It’s one of those games I can just jump into and the time suddenly slips by while I jump from race to race against random players from around the world.

Nexon has announced that the free to play mulitiplayer racing game is getting a bit of a holiday makeover. They will be decking the halls …er tracks with Christmas items to get you into the holiday spirit.

Here’s the press release with more details:

KartRider’s Winter Wonderland

Holiday Tracks and Events Lighting Up the KartRider Christmas Season

Los Angeles, CA – December 12, 2007 – Nexon America Inc. is lighting up KartRider’s Arctic Rim with Christmas ornaments and decorations this holiday season. With tracks from Arctic Rim reverberating Christmas spirit, KartRider is also presenting holiday events, music and prizes to supplement the festivities. Already surpassing enormous expectations, KartRider, the free-to-download, free-to-play online multiplayer racing game, is anticipating an influx of new and returning users during the holidays. More information can be found at http://kart.nexon.net.

More specifically, Shark’s Fin, Penguin Town, and Ice Cave, the three tracks that currently comprise the Arctic Rim courses in KartRider, received a Christmas makeover that includes candy cane poles, penguins clad in Santa gear, and jingly bells amongst the numerous decorations. There will also be Christmas carol background music. Much like the neighbors on your block who are fiercely prideful of their annual Christmas light decorations, Nexon America is going all-out in an effort to bring holiday spirit to the rapidly growing number of KartRider users.

In addition to the decorations, KartRider is rolling out bigger events and prizes in the spirit of the season. KartRider’s Holiday Marathon, an endurance race for serious kart enthusiasts, boasts rewards such as laptop computers and Ipods, among other must-have holiday gifts. KartRider’s Myspace users are getting involved with the Holiday Wish List event, which prompts users to leave comments on the KartRider Myspace page stating which item from the Item Shop they’d like to receive for Christmas and why; winners will be selected to receive their holiday wish based their comments provided.

Also being released this month is the Holiday Plate and Holiday Baton items. The plate will be available in the Item Shop while the baton will be awarded to users who complete a certain amount of races in a quest. The Holiday Plate and Holiday Baton allow users to show their spirit through two different venues and promises to light up the karts of millions of users.

With all the decorations, events, and gifts, it’s shaping up to be a very merry Christmas for KartRider users. KartRider fans can check on http://kart.nexon.net for more news and updates regarding open beta and official launch. Nexon plans a pedal to the metal onslaught of promotions, contests, and events in coordination with KartRider’s launch schedule to “drive” this title to success!

Action Combat Based MMO Fury Now a Full Free To Play PC Game

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

Fury is an MMO built on the Unreal 3 engine that claims to have combat at the pace of an FPS with the strategic depth of an RPG. As one more holiday present to us free-loving PC gamers… with the update to be published on December 14th, it will now free to download and free to play!

See the full details in the press release below:

Free Play Option For FURY Coming December 14

"Age of the Chosen" Update to Bring Major Changes

Cockpit, Austin, TX - December 11, 2007 – Gamecock Media Group and Auran Games today announced a new Free to Download, Free to Play option for their fast paced arena combat game FURY. The new business model will begin with the release of the first major free content update “Age of the Chosen” on December 14, 2007.

“FURY was built around giving players options that suit their play style and their wallet,” said Tony Hilliam, CEO of Auran. “With the AotC update, we are introducing a new player category called “Chosen”. As one of the Chosen, players can access all game types, equip all weapons and unlock all 400 abilities – and they can play as much as they like absolutely free. This is a fantastic opportunity for players to jump into battle with their mates and discover the frenetic pace of the fastest RPG combat ever. Chosen will earn less gold and essence, and will not be able to trade with other players.”

“Chosen players can purchase game gold from the FURY store or upgrade to “Hero” status to earn more Essence and Gold. Retail stores sell the “Hero” status pack, along with a free month of “Immortal” status, so this is $30 value for the new price of $19.99 (in US stores). As a Hero or Immortal players can unlock abilities faster and purchase better gear, but the matchmaker then ensures they are playing against other players of similar skill and rank.”

FURY: Age of the Chosen is a massive free content update that introduces two new game types aimed at the new player. “Carnage” throws two teams into battle with the aim of returning blood tokens to their base faster than their opposition. Blood tokens are gained from killing bots, not other players, so the action is indirect competition rather than head to head. The 1v1 Elimination game type means games will spawn faster and matches are more evenly balanced.

For more on FURY, visit www.unleashthefury.com. Also, be sure and visit http://www.unleashthefury.com/ageofthechosen/ for information on the Age of the Chosen update and new business model.

Free PC Game Dungeon Runners Launches Update - Advertising Added and Non-Paying Players Benefit

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

Dungeon Runners has release the latest update entitled "Chunk 2" for the free to play satirical MMO. A big part of this update is new in-game advertising. This benefits non-paying free accounts! Content and functionality that was previously only available to paying players will now be open to all. The only difference is that there will be advertising in loading screens and a banner positioned at the top of the game window. This advertising will offset the costs to play.

I LOVE this model! It gives us the choice… let the advertisers pay for us to play in exchange for ad impressions or put up the cash ourselves. It keeps the game free, the developers get the money that they deserve and we all are happy gamers!

Here’s the press release:

NCsoft Launches Chunk 2, Adding Advertising, New Content To Dungeon Runners Game

Tuesday 11th December/… BRIGHTON, 5th December, 2007 – NCsoft® Europe today announced the release of Chunk 2, the second content update for its successful free-to-download and play game, Dungeon Runners™.

This update includes in-game advertising in non-member worlds, more bank space for members, item trading, increased access to prime loot, and overall Player versus Environment (PvE) and Player versus Player (PvP) balance refinements.

Dungeon Runners is a free to download and play online multiplayer role playing game in a satirical, fast-paced sword-and-shield setting, where defeating monsters and evil enemy’s results in piles of loot, treasure, and non-stop fun.

The hallmark of Chunk 2 is in-game advertising which will help fund future development of the massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) and keep it free for players. The in-game advertising will be visible to non-members in loading screens and in a banner that sits on top of the game window during play. Dungeon Runners members, who can subscribe to the game for only $4.99 per month (equivalent to approximately £2.50), will not see any of the advertising.

Advertising in Dungeon Runners will open up new content and functionality for all players. Non-member players will gain access to new content previously unavailable to them, including dungeons and valuable items. Also, non-members will now have access to one page of bank slots, enabling them to store more items. Members will increase their bank storage space from one to three pages.

Also, by popular demand, a secure trade system has been added to Dungeon Runners. This new feature allows everyone to easily trade items (with the exception of gold) with other players through a simple interface.

“Chunk 2 unlocks an enormous amount of playable content for non-members that they didn’t have access to before thanks to the addition of in-game advertising,” said Stephen Nichols, NCsoft’s producer and lead programmer for Dungeon Runners. “Our non-member players are very happy they can now use what was previously members-only loot, and our members are really excited about receiving additional bank slots to hold their items. These changes, plus our new secure trade system, make this update a win-win for everyone!”

Further enhancements include increased rare item drops and stackable potions for members and non-members alike, which lead to more success in this hack–and-slash game.

Dungeon Runners can be downloaded for free at http://www.dungeonrunners.com/join.html. Players can play for free or subscribe to the members version at any point for $4.99 a month. Members have access to such benefits as log-in queue priority, members-only servers, and the most powerful items, weapons and armor. Membership status also includes three bank pages for hundreds of loot items and the ability to stack potions in one inventory slot to save room for even more loot.

To find out more please visit the Dungeon Runners web site at: www.dungeonrunners.com.

The game is rated Teen by the Entertainment Software Rating Board.

Digital Eel Makes 2 Full PC and Mac Games Available For Free To All

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

Here’s another early holiday gift for all of you free gamers… "Big Box of Blox" and "Dr. Blob’s Organism" are both now completely free to download and play.

From the Digital Eel site:

THE BOX IS OPEN AND THE BLOB IS LOOSE!

Just in time to stuff into your virtual holiday stockings, Digital Eel hereby declares that Big Box of Blox and Dr. Blob’s Organism are now FREE! Yep, that’s TWO games for the low, low price of $0! How can this be, you ask? Because it’s that time of year when everyone should be thinking about sharing, absolutely, and we want to show our gratitude to gamers (you know who you are) for supporting us –but also because free stuff is fun!

The best part is yet to come. This applies to BOTH the Mac and PC versions of these games!

Big Box of Blox is Digital Eel’s first attempt to skewer the matching game genre (something we seem to like to do from time to time, ahem), with five different game variants, eye-popping art by Phosphorous and one of Digital Eel’s more bizarre sound productions. You don’t want to miss this one, especially for free! So, as we say: "Enter the Asylum, visit the Mushroom King and spin the Wheels of Fortune with Digital Eel’s Big Box of Blox!" Click here to go get it.

The IGF double award winning Dr. Blob’s Organism is a frenetic shoot ‘em up based on John Conway’s Game of Life. Players blast feisty one-celled organisms as they try to escape from a petri dish. Each level in the game introduces new powerups and more dangerous organisms with special abilities. Playing this game, you will learn to fear the word mitosis even as you get sucked in by the visuals, music (lots of tracks!), lightning-fast gameplay, and moist and squishy sound effects. Okay, no more waiting. Click here to blast blobs.

Enjoy!

Free PC Dance Game Audition Gets Lifehouse Music Addition

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

I tried Nexon’s Audition out earlier this year… Personally I prefer their KartRider and MapleStory games, but that’s just me. The game consists of pressing the arrow and space bar keys to repeat patterns in given intervals to perform choreographed dance moves. You can customize your "dancer" and compete against other players in various modes.

I just saw this press release discussing the addition of some well known bands into the games music mix:

Red Hot Nexon America Moves Lifehouse Into Audition

Audition Expands Prestigious Music List with Hit Single from Multi-Platinum Band

Los Angeles, CA – November 30, 2007 – Nexon America Inc., the U.S. division of Asia’s leading family-friendly, online entertainment provider Nexon Group, continues to add celebrated artists to its all-star lineup in Audition. Already packed with Grammy winners, platinum recording artists, teen pop sensations, and music icons, Audition, the free-to-play online dance sensation, can be downloaded for free at http://audition.nexon.net.

Nexon America knows Audition is ready to rock with the addition of popular trio Lifehouse and the lead track, Disarray, from its album Who We Are. Lifehouse is bound to earn heavy requests from the 200,000+ dancers in the game.

“Audition gives us a new medium to get our music heard,” said Jason Wade of Lifehouse. “Now these gamers, who might not have heard us on the radio or been to one of our shows, can get a taste of some of our songs, like Disarray, and even rock out with a little dance off in the game.”

The addition of Lifehouse ushers in several new sounds in Audition, including those from Swedish rock band The Sounds, whose definitive New Wave appeal manifested in Tony the Beat and Dance with Me, a perfect fit for the game’s dancing environment.

Jennifer Lopez is also expecting players to Do it Well, the aptly named title of her prominently featured new single in Audition. And you can expect Audition to keep Poppin off with Chris Brown lending his mega-hit single with the same name. Yellowcard also makes a highly anticipated debut in Audition.

The diverse range of songs recently added to Audition include:

Armin Van Buuren – Communication

Billie Holiday – Spreadin’ Rhythm Around

Chris Brown – Poppin

Earth, Wind & Fire – Boogie Wonderland

Fantasia – When I See U

Lifehouse - Disarray

Jennifer Lopez – Do it Well

Jim Jones – We Fly High

Joss Stone – Headturner

Junkie XL – Yesterdays

Mandisa – Only the World

MIMS – Like This

The Sounds – Dance with Me

Tobymac – Gone, One World

Yellowcard – Light up the Sky

With simple directional and space bar keystrokes, Audition players perform hip-hop style dance steps and choreographed routines which require precise timing and rhythm. Players compete in various dance modes, each with its own distinctive features and objectives. Audition’s in-game reward system gives dancers, ‘Beats,’ or currency used to purchase a variety of items from the cash shop.

North American gamers are quickly learning why Nexon Games such as Audition are among the most popular games in the world. With the option to play entirely for free and the alternative to spend money for in-game enhancements at the cash shop, Nexon America is offering casual gamers the best in free online entertainment.

About Nexon America

Nexon America Inc. is the North American publishing arm of Nexon Group, a pioneer of interactive entertainment software and the world’s leader in massively multiplayer online games. Based in Los Angeles, Nexon America was founded in 2005 to bring the best of online entertainment to the North American audience. The company’s growing library of titles includes the world famous, smash-hit franchise, MapleStory, the motion-captured dance battle game, Audition, and the enormously-popular racing game, KartRider. The foundation of all Nexon America titles is the Item Selling business model, in which users access the full game for free and can later opt to play for game enhancements.
